The Database on Return Migrants to the Maghreb (DReMM)

To enhance the dissemination of the outcomes of the MIREM survey carried out in Algeria Morocco and Tunisia, the Database on Return Migrants to the Maghreb (DReMM) is now available online.

The DReMM constitutes a rich source of information regarding the processes of reintegration of around one thousand return migrants and their post-return conditions in their countries of origin. The global report published online, as well as the preliminary descriptive analyses posted on the web site, and the ensuing analytical reports produced by the MIREM team, give a comprehensive overview of the analytical potential of the database.

It includes an array of variables allowing the analysis of return migrants’:

      • Sociodemographic characteristics (age, place of birth, sex, marital status, countries of immigration, countries of return);
      • Social and professional situations (occupations, skills, vocational training);
      • Levels of education;
      • Resources (average salary, frequency and amount of remittances, human capital, social capital)
      • Experiences of migration (including length of stay abroad, interaction with host society, contacts with local authorities);
      • Motivations to :
          • Leave for abroad;
          • Return;
          • Stay on a permanent basis in the country of origin;
          • Stay on a temporary basis in the country of origin;
      • Post-return conditions and prospects.

All the variables contained in the DReMM strictly refer to those contained in the three-stage questionnaire that was used by the MIREM team during the implementation of the fieldwork.

Consequently, you need to download the questionnaire (available in French only) in order to effectively make use of the coded data listed in the DReMM.

Also, we strongly recommend reading the methodological framework of the MIREM survey before making use of the database and consulting the terminological glossary, as used by the MIREM project.

The DReMM is compressed (zipped) in a folder containing the formats in SPSS and in American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII).
